The future of Mentimeter
9 June 2025
Kamila Brown, from the Learning and Teaching Academy’s Digital Education team, explains why she believes Mentimeter may be on a sharp upward trend.
Not only is it recognised as a powerful tool for boosting audience engagement, enabling authentic responses, and promoting inclusivity, but Mentimeter is also a strong contender in formative assessment practices. As part of Cardiff University’s Learning and Teaching CPD programme, I have been leading and co-leading sessions on ‘Formative Assessment Ideas using Mentimeter’ for quite some time now, and it can be fascinating to hear from our colleagues how supportive this platform can be for formative type of assessment in their teaching practices. With a good mix of question types and anonymity element intertwined into its design, there is quite a lot this tool can achieve, especially in terms of creating more authentic and relaxed assessment.
With its recently added AI-powered feature — such as group responses, Mentimeter can now also surface interesting trends from audience responses. Please note this feature is currently not available to Cardiff University but we will be introducing it in due course.
I agree with some experts from in Higher Education who forecast that AI might be a drive for the development of more authentic, accessible and formative assessment methods in future. And, with this in mind, I think platforms like Mentimeter may become more widely and effectively used than ever before.
Looking at the latest data pulled from Mentimeter statistics, here, at Cardiff University, in the last 6 months, there were in total, 3860 presentations created, and the total responses amounted to 319,489. I guess you can say numbers speak for themselves, but let’s see what happens with these numbers in the near future, especially with AI rapidly evolving in education and assessment.
